Hey, welcome to How It’s Done: A podcast for curious marketers. I’m Kriste Goad. I’ll be your host, and I’m really glad you’re here.
[00:00:15.650] – Kriste
Today, we’re talking with Dennis Dailey, publisher and editor of Mobile Health Times. As we get ready for ViVE, the digital health conference taking place right here in Nashville next week, March 26 through the 29th at Music City Center. ViVE is where innovative leaders come together to discuss and showcase how they’re transforming healthcare and technology.
But first, a little about Dennis. Dennis has been a recognized thought leader in healthcare for more than 20 years. As publisher and editor in chief and lead reporter for Mobile Health Times, he covers the latest in healthcare technology trends and innovations. His life mission to help people live healthier lives started in the 90s when he produced the national television program Healthy Living with Dr. Joyce brothers for CNBC. Now, Dennis is launching HITshow, a snackable health industry video series.
Welcome to the show, Dennis.
[00:01:11.120] – Dennis Dailey
Hey, Kriste. Thanks for having me on today. It’s great to talk to you.
[00:01:14.890] – Kriste
It’s great to talk to you, too. Let’s just dive right in. What do you say?
[00:01:19.020] – Dennis
Let’s go.
[00:01:20.810] – Kriste
Will you tell our listeners a little bit about Mobile Health Times?
[00:01:24.350] – Dennis
So, Mobile Health Times covers the latest news in healthcare information technology, as well as a broad range of trends in healthcare. It’s completely editorially based. There is no financial incentive behind this, and I’ve been producing it for about nine years now.
[00:01:42.900] – Kriste
Wow, that’s awesome. So you love it. You’re a health tech geek, well, I know you’re very active and planning to attend ViVE here in Nashville next week. What are you expecting this year?
[00:01:58.330] – Dennis
When we think about the environment that is bringing healthcare leaders together in Nashville, there’s a couple of major things you have to recognize. First of all, the industry is facing a lot of challenges, and I say number one of those is labor. We’ve had the great resignation. We’ve had quiet quitting and then burnout across the board in healthcare providers. So I think those leaders are going to be looking for ways to improve operational efficiency through adopting digital innovation. Also, the industry is going through a wild metamorphosis. We’re seeing this push toward more consumerism hospital at home, home health care, telehealth, and we like to say that genie is not going back in the bottle. So we’re seeing all sorts of different models around that and some really exciting new companies that have come to the market in the last six months or so to help on both those fronts. How do healthcare providers participate and improve operational efficiency through virtual care models as well as improve their labor issues?
[00:03:14.190] – Kriste
So next week at ViVE, what are you specifically going to be doing? Are you going to be doing some interviews for your HITshow? Are you going to be doing interviews for your publication? All the above?
[00:03:25.230] – DennisWell, we’ve already received over 150 press releases of new announcements, new technologies, new partnerships that will be announced becoming live. They’re under embargo now, but they’ll be coming live next week at ViVE. So Mobile Health Times staff has a very busy few days ahead preparing for all that news, that avalanche of news. Specifically, I’m moving the needle forward with HITshow, which is a social video series where we cover news on a daily basis. It’s quick hits. These are quick hit, snackable social videos. They’re about two minutes in length. You’ll see them on LinkedIn and on Twitter or on HITshow. And at ViVE, we’re going to be doing Live from ViVE. So I’ll be doing live from ViVE. That’s right. And so we’ll be doing interviews all day long on Monday and Tuesday and got a packed production schedule already of industry experts, vendors, leaders from the provider community as well. So it’s going to be very busy on the floor for us because we’re going to turn those around and edit them immediately after we shoot them and have them live on our social channels the same day.
[00:04:42.430] – Kriste
Oh, great. So if people are there or aren’t there, they can kind of keep up with what’s happening if they’re following your HITshow.
[00:04:51.310] – Dennis
Thanks, Kriste, for the plug. There’s so much going on at ViVE and people get so busy and it’s a lot of fun, but it is hard to keep up with things. So, yes, if they follow HITshow or just follow me on LinkedIn or on Twitter, they’ll be able to see what we covered. Maybe they saw some great stuff too and we’d love to hear their comments as well.
[00:05:14.950] – Kriste
So our podcast is a podcast for curious marketers, and I bet the marketers out there would be curious. How do you sift through 150 press releases? And that’s just so far. Imagine you’ll get probably 150 more plus between now and next week. How do you prioritize that? How do you sift through that? Is it the way someone’s maybe telling their story through their press release that catches your attention? Talk to us a little bit about your process.
[00:05:47.390]- Dennis
As a journalist, I try to be unbiased, and especially since Mobile Health Times is not a monetized property. We don’t take advertising, we don’t have paid subscribers, we can pick and choose what we want. So if I’m talking to the marketers in the world, I like to say that when you’re doing media relations, it’s the relationship that comes first and then the media will follow. So those folks in marketing and PR world that know me and there are some really great folks in that world, love working with them. I can’t wait to see my friends in Nashville in that space. I’m sure they’ll be coming to the press room looking for me and I do take a close look at their stories first. That said, I really try to cover the news and we see a lot of pitches that are just the same old, same old, or they don’t really fit in with the whole healthcare information technology theme. They give surveys that aren’t really fully complete, or they’re just sort of just surveys that were sort of paid for to support their point. Those get tossed out. We love it most of all when the vendors customers are willing to talk to us because we’re reaching hospital executives.
[00:07:08.000] – Dennis
Those folks are busy. They don’t have time for a lot of fooling around. But what they do have time for is, where are my friends in the industry? Make it work. So I have to give a big shout out to ViVE and for having Chime be such an important part of their community, because that’s where we’re going to get those interviews with those CIOs that are making impactful change and sharing what’s working within their facilities. Also, Kriste, I’m really excited about startup Health and what they’re doing there. I’ve been friends with Unity and Logan Plaster has been one of our Power Press Award winners, the only one that’s won it twice. So I’m really excited to see what’s going on in the Startup Health Pavilion next week. And Kriste around ViVE. There’s so much other excitement that goes on. They really know how to do a conference right, so they show a lot of respect.
[00:08:06.170] – Kriste
Did you go last year?
[00:08:07.630] – Dennis
I did go. I did go in Miami last year. And it’s great because they have respect for the media there. We have an ability, as opposed to some other notable industry conferences, they treat us right. They give us a press lounge, they give us a meeting space, they feed us, they make it easy for us to do our job. They’ve given me a great place to shoot for HITshow, so I want to commend ViVE on the branding work, but it’s actually more than branding, it’s actually how they built their platform. So love that ViVE does that. And we’re going to, of course, have this huge industry night event where we’re going to have the Black Crows coming to play. Yeah, for us. Yeah. Right on.
[00:08:54.970] – Kriste
It’s going to be a blast. So, people can find you in the actual press room?
[00:09:01.040] – Dennis
Well, I’m going to be shooting all day on Monday and Tuesday in an area near Registration called the Alco. We have interviews lined up about every half an hour throughout the day already on Monday and Tuesday. But if somebody wanted to reach out, they’ve got a compelling story. They didn’t know that I was going to be doing this yet. They could email me. That’s fine. Okay.
[00:09:23.380]- Kriste
What if they just show up? You squeeze them in, like, five minutes.
[00:09:29.110] – Dennis
I doubt it, because we don’t do that well. They could show up and say hi, but I may not be able to say more than hi because we’ll be either editing or interviewing.
[00:09:37.450] – Kriste
Well, that’s going to be fun.
[00:09:38.870] – Dennis
We’ve got some great interviews lined up.
[00:09:40.880] – Kriste
I can’t wait. Can you give any sneak previews or is that we just got to wait and see?
[00:09:45.770] – Dennis
I would say look for my coverage later I don’t know when you’re putting this out Kriste, but I would say look for my coverage later this week because we already have interviews with Steven Classco, who’s executive in residence at General Catalyst. Now we have an interview with Dr. Rue from Dr. David Rue, who’s chief medical officer at Microsoft. We have the CEO of Ardent Healthcare and the chairman of the American Hospital Federation, Marty Bonnick.
[00:10:16.630] – Kriste
Bunch of Nashville guys.
[00:10:18.310] – Dennis
Yeah. Bunch of Nashville guys. That’s right. There’s some great folks going to be in our preview of him coming up later this week.
[00:10:29.360] – Kriste
Okay, well, so to make good on this just being a short quick hit, what else should we talk about? What have we not covered about ViVE or anything you’re going to be doing there or anything you want people to know before we wrap up?
[00:10:43.680] – Dennis
It’s a great question, Kristie, and what I would say is I would love it if people would continue to follow HITshow as we grow our platform this year. There are sponsored options as well as earned options. They’re very low cost. And we’re doing wraparound coverage, obviously, of ViVE, but we’ll also be doing wraparound coverage at HIMSS and then we’ll be doing a bunch of interviews at the Reuters Digital Health event in San Diego in May.
[00:11:10.150] – Kriste
You’re going to be busy, Dennis?
[00:11:12.210] – Dennis
Yeah, and my son’s getting married in May as well. So, yeah, I’ve got a full plate the next six or seven weeks.
[00:11:20.170] – Kriste
Well, how can people get in touch with you? Tell me all the things.
[00:11:23.290] – Dennis
